Cananga odorata

Cananga odorata (pronounced: kəˈnæŋɡə oʊdəˈrɑːtə), commonly known as the Ylang-Ylang tree, is a tropical tree species that belongs to the family Annonaceae. The term "Cananga odorata" is derived from the Indonesian name for the tree, "kenanga," and the Latin word "odorata," which means fragrant.

Description

Cananga odorata is a fast-growing tree that can reach up to 20 meters in height. It has drooping branches with long, narrow, pointed leaves and clusters of yellow-green flowers that emit a highly fragrant scent. The tree is best known for its flowers, which are used to produce Ylang-Ylang oil, a highly valued essential oil used in aromatherapy and perfumery.

Distribution and Habitat

Cananga odorata is native to the rainforests of the Philippines and Indonesia but is now grown in tropical areas around the world, including Polynesia, Melanesia, and Micronesia. It thrives in full or partial sun, in rich, well-drained soil.

Uses

The primary use of Cananga odorata is the extraction of Ylang-Ylang oil from its flowers. This oil is used in aromatherapy for its calming and relaxing effects. It is also a key ingredient in many perfumes, including the famous Chanel No. 5.
