The COVID-19 pandemic in the United Kingdom (pronounced /ˈkoʊvɪd naɪnˈtiːn pænˈdɛmɪk ɪn ðə ˈjuːnaɪtɪd kɪŋdəm/) refers to the ongoing viral pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), a novel infectious disease caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), in the United Kingdom. The etymology of the term "COVID-19" comes from "CO" for corona, "VI" for virus, "D" for disease, and "19" for the year the disease was first identified, 2019.
