Buffalo County is a county located in the western part of the U.S. state of Wisconsin. As of the 2020 census, the population was 13,317. Its county seat is Alma. The county was created in 1853 and named for the Buffalo River.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 710 square miles (1,800 km²), of which 672 square miles (1,740 km²) is land and 38 square miles (98 km²) (5.3%) is water. The county is part of the Driftless Area, a region that was not glaciated during the last ice age.

As of the 2020 census, there were 13,317 people, 5,700 households, and 3,700 families residing in the county. The population density was 19.8 people per square mile (7.6/km²). The racial makeup of the county was 97.5% White, 0.3% Black or African American, 0.4% Native American, 0.3% Asian, and 1.5% from two or more races. 1.2% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Buffalo County is governed by a county board of supervisors, which consists of representatives from each of the county's districts. The board is responsible for setting policy and overseeing the administration of county services.

Buffalo County is served by several school districts, including the Alma School District, the Cochrane-Fountain City School District, and the Mondovi School District. Higher education opportunities are available at nearby institutions such as University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire and Winona State University.
