British Virgin Islands (pronunciation: /ˈbrɪtɪʃ ˈvɝːdʒɪn ˈaɪləndz/) is a British Overseas Territory located in the Caribbean to the east of Puerto Rico.
Etymology
The name "Virgin Islands" was given by Christopher Columbus in 1493 in honor of Saint Ursula and her 11,000 virgins. "British" was prefixed to distinguish the islands from the U.S. Virgin Islands.
Geography
The British Virgin Islands consist of the main islands of Tortola, Virgin Gorda, Anegada, and Jost Van Dyke, along with over fifty other smaller islands and cays.
Health Care
Health care in the British Virgin Islands is managed by the Ministry of Health and Social Development. The main hospital is the Dr. D. Orlando Smith Hospital on Tortola. There are also smaller health clinics on the other islands.
