European

European (pronunciation: /ˌjʊərəˈpiːən/) refers to anything related to Europe, the second smallest continent in the world, or its inhabitants. The term is derived from the Greek word 'Ευρώπη', which means 'wide-gazing' or 'broad of aspect'.

Etymology

The term 'European' is derived from the name of the ancient Greek mythological figure 'Europa'. According to the myth, Europa was a Phoenician princess whom Zeus, the king of the gods, abducted after assuming the form of a dazzling white bull. He swam with her on his back to the island of Crete where he revealed his true identity and made her the first queen of Crete. The continent of Europe was later named after her.
