Puerto Rico (pronounced /ˌpwɛərtoʊ ˈriːkoʊ/, Spanish: [ˈpweɾto ˈriko]; "Rich Port"), officially the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico (Spanish: Estado Libre Asociado de Puerto Rico) is an unincorporated territory of the United States located in the northeast Caribbean Sea, approximately 1,000 miles (1,600 km) southeast of Miami, Florida.
Etymology
The name Puerto Rico, meaning "rich port," was given by the Spanish explorers who discovered the island in the early 16th century. The name was inspired by the abundant gold the explorers found in the island's rivers and streams.
