British Columbia
British Columbia
British Columbia (pronunciation: /ˌbrɪtɪʃ kəˈlʌmbiə/) is the westernmost province of Canada, located between the Pacific Ocean and the Rocky Mountains.
Etymology
The name British Columbia is derived from the Columbia River, which was named by American captain Robert Gray who explored the river in the late 18th century. The "British" part of the name was added to distinguish it from the American part of the Columbia River. The name Columbia itself comes from the name of Christopher Columbus, the Italian explorer who is credited with discovering the Americas.
