Bed rest

Bed rest (pronunciation: /bɛd rɛst/), also known as recumbency or lying down, is a medical treatment in which a person lies in bed for most of some period to allow the body to heal. It is a common treatment for a wide range of medical conditions.

Etymology

The term "bed rest" is derived from the Old English words "bedd" (meaning bed) and "ræst" (meaning rest). It has been in use since the 14th century.

Related Terms

  • Convalescence: The gradual recovery of health and strength after illness or injury.
  • Immobility: The state of not moving; motionlessness.
  • Rehabilitation (medicine): A specialty of medicine which aims to enhance and restore functional ability and quality of life to those with physical impairments or disabilities.
  • Physical therapy: The treatment of disease, injury, or deformity by physical methods such as massage, heat treatment, and exercise rather than by drugs or surgery.

Usage

Bed rest is often prescribed in the treatment of certain medical conditions, including back pain, high blood pressure, and certain complications of pregnancy. However, the effectiveness of bed rest has been questioned in recent years, with some studies suggesting that prolonged bed rest can actually be harmful to the patient's health.

Risks

While bed rest can be beneficial in some cases, it also carries risks. These include muscle atrophy, bone loss, and an increased risk of blood clots. It is therefore important that bed rest is only prescribed when the benefits outweigh the risks.
