Baltimore County is a county located in the northern part of the U.S. state of Maryland. As of the 2020 census, the population was 854,535, making it the third-most populous county in Maryland. The county seat is Towson.
History
Baltimore County was created in 1659 as one of the original counties of Maryland. The county was named for Cecilius Calvert, 2nd Baron Baltimore, the first Proprietary Governor of the Province of Maryland. The county has a rich history, including its role in the War of 1812 and the American Civil War.
Geography
Baltimore County is located in the northern part of Maryland, bordered by Harford County to the northeast, Carroll County to the northwest, Howard County to the southwest, and Anne Arundel County to the south. The county surrounds but does not include the independent city of Baltimore.
The county has a total area of 682 square miles, of which 598 square miles is land and 84 square miles is water. The Patapsco River forms part of the southern boundary of the county.

As of the 2020 census, Baltimore County had a population of 854,535. The county is diverse, with a mix of urban, suburban, and rural areas. The largest community in the county is Towson, which serves as the county seat.
