Backpack

Backpack (/ˈbækˌpæk/), also known as knapsack, rucksack, packsack, or sackpack, is a cloth sack carried on one's back and secured with two straps that go over the shoulders.

Etymology

The term "backpack" was coined in the United States in the 1910s. "Moneybag" and "packsack" were used prior, and now occur mainly as regionalisms. The word rucksack is a German loanword mainly used in the UK and in Western military forces.

Types of Backpacks

There are several types of backpacks, including:

  • Daypack: A smaller, frameless backpack used for carrying goods during day trips.
  • Hiking Backpack: A backpack designed to provide comfort and support for long-distance hiking.
  • Hydration Backpack: A backpack designed with a built-in water bladder system.
  • Laptop Backpack: A backpack designed to protect and carry laptops.
