BBC World Service is an international broadcaster, owned and operated by the BBC. It is the world's largest international broadcaster, broadcasting news, speech, and discussions in more than 40 languages to many parts of the world on analogue and digital shortwave platforms, internet streaming, podcasting, satellite, DAB, FM and MW relays.

History[edit]

The BBC World Service began broadcasting on 19 December 1932 as the BBC Empire Service, aimed principally at English speakers across the British Empire. The name was changed to the BBC Overseas Service in 1939 and the BBC World Service in 1965. The service gained a reputation for reliability and impartiality during World War II and the Cold War.
