Australian Americans

Australian Americans are individuals in the United States who have full or partial ancestry from Australia. This group includes both Australian immigrants to the United States and their descendants.

History

The history of Australian Americans dates back to the 19th century. The California Gold Rush of 1849 attracted many Australians, who were drawn by the promise of wealth and opportunity. This initial wave of migration was followed by smaller numbers of Australians who moved to the United States for various reasons, including economic opportunities, education, and family reunification.

20th Century

During the 20th century, the number of Australians moving to the United States increased, particularly after World War II. The post-war economic boom in the United States, along with the White Australia policy's restrictions, made the U.S. an attractive destination for skilled workers and professionals.

Recent Trends

In recent decades, the flow of Australians to the United States has continued, with many Australians moving for work, particularly in industries such as technology, finance, and entertainment. The E-3 visa, introduced in 2005, has facilitated the migration of Australian professionals to the United States.

Demographics

According to the United States Census Bureau, there are approximately 100,000 people of Australian descent living in the United States. The largest populations of Australian Americans are found in major urban areas such as Los Angeles, New York City, and San Francisco.

Culture

Australian Americans contribute to the cultural diversity of the United States. They often maintain cultural ties to Australia, celebrating Australian holidays such as Australia Day and ANZAC Day. Australian cuisine, including dishes like Vegemite and meat pies, has also found a niche in American food culture.
