Rupert Murdoch

Keith Rupert Murdoch (born 11 March 1931) is an Australian-American business magnate, media proprietor, and investor. He is the founder of News Corp, a global media conglomerate, and has played a significant role in the development of modern media.

Early Life

Murdoch was born in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, to Sir Keith Murdoch and Dame Elisabeth Murdoch. He attended the University of Oxford, where he studied Philosophy, Politics and Economics.

Career

Murdoch began his career in the media industry by taking over the management of The News, a small Adelaide newspaper, after his father's death. He expanded his media empire by acquiring various newspapers in Australia and New Zealand.

Expansion into the United Kingdom

In the 1960s, Murdoch entered the United Kingdom market by purchasing the News of the World and later The Sun. His acquisition of The Times and The Sunday Times further solidified his presence in the UK media landscape.

Expansion into the United States

Murdoch expanded into the United States in the 1970s by acquiring the San Antonio Express-News. He later purchased the New York Post and established Fox News, which became a major player in the American news industry.

Formation of News Corporation

In 1980, Murdoch founded News Corporation, which became one of the world's largest media companies. The company owned various assets, including 20th Century Fox, HarperCollins, and The Wall Street Journal.

21st Century Fox and Subsequent Developments

In 2013, News Corporation was split into two companies: 21st Century Fox and the new News Corp. 21st Century Fox focused on film and television, while News Corp concentrated on publishing. In 2019, 21st Century Fox was acquired by The Walt Disney Company.

Personal Life

Murdoch has been married four times and has six children. His children include Lachlan Murdoch and James Murdoch, who have both held significant roles within his media empire.

Legacy

Murdoch's influence on global media is profound. He has been a controversial figure, often criticized for his political influence and the practices of his media outlets. Despite this, his impact on the media industry is undeniable.
