Arverne, Queens

Arverne is a neighborhood located in the borough of Queens in New York City. It is part of Queens Community Board 14. Arverne extends from Beach 56th Street to Beach 79th Street, along its main thoroughfare Beach Channel Drive, alternatively known as Rev. Joseph H. May Drive.

History

Arverne was named after the developer, Remington Vernam. He was the one who designed the neighborhood's street grid. The area was initially a beachfront community for the lower middle class, which was developed in the 1880s. The construction of public housing projects in the 1950s and 60s brought a significant change to Arverne.

Geography

Arverne is located on the Rockaway Peninsula, bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the south and Jamaica Bay to the north. The neighborhood is surrounded by Bayswater to the west and Edgemere to the east.

Demographics

Arverne is a diverse neighborhood with a significant African American population. The neighborhood also has a growing number of Hispanic, Asian, and White residents.

Transportation

Arverne is served by the New York City Subway's A train, which stops at Arverne – Beach 67th Street. The Q22 bus also serves the area.

Education

The New York City Department of Education operates public schools in Arverne. The neighborhood is home to PS/MS 42 Robert Vernam, Village Academy, and Goldie Maple Academy.

Notable people

Several notable people have lived in or been associated with Arverne, including rapper Chinx, who grew up in the neighborhood, and Bernard Madoff, who had a home in Arverne.
