Anatolia

Anatolia (pronounced /ænəˈtoʊliə/), also known as Asia Minor, is a large peninsula in Western Asia and the westernmost protrusion of the Asian continent. It constitutes the major part of modern-day Turkey.

Etymology

The term "Anatolia" is derived from the Greek word "Ἀνατολή" (Anatolḗ) which means "the East" or "sunrise". The precise reference of this term has varied over time, perhaps originally referring to the Aeolian, Ionian and Dorian colonies on the west coast of Asia Minor.
