Amfecloral
Amfecloral
Amfecloral (pronounced am-FE-clor-al) is a stimulant drug that was formerly used as an anorectic. It is chemically related to amphetamine and chlorphentermine.
Etymology
The term "Amfecloral" is derived from the chemical structure of the drug, which is an amphetamine derivative with a chlorophenyl group. The "Amfe" part of the name comes from "amphetamine", and the "cloral" part comes from "chlorophenyl".
Pharmacology
Amfecloral acts as a norepinephrine-dopamine reuptake inhibitor (NDRI), increasing the levels of the neurotransmitters norepinephrine and dopamine in the brain. This results in increased alertness, focus, and reduced appetite.
Medical Use
Amfecloral was used as an anorectic in the treatment of obesity. However, due to concerns about potential for abuse and addiction, it is no longer marketed.
Side Effects
Potential side effects of Amfecloral include insomnia, restlessness, increased heart rate, and increased blood pressure. Long-term use can lead to drug dependence and withdrawal symptoms upon cessation.
