Etymology

The word Aluminum comes from the Latin word "alumen" which means bitter salt. The British spelling, aluminium, is derived from the original Latin word with the addition of the -ium suffix, as in other elements.

Properties and Uses

Aluminum is remarkable for its low density and its ability to resist corrosion. It is used in many industries to manufacture a large variety of products and is very important in the world economy. It is the most widely used non-ferrous metal.

Health Effects

Exposure to aluminum is usually not harmful, but exposure to high levels can cause serious health problems. Some studies show that people exposed to high levels of aluminum may develop Alzheimer's disease, but other research has not found this to be the case.
