It is one of the All India Institutes of Medical Sciences established under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY) initiative aimed at correcting regional imbalances in quality tertiary level healthcare in the country and attaining self-sufficiency in graduate and postgraduate medical education.
