All India Institutes of Medical Sciences

All India Institutes of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) are a group of autonomous public medical colleges of higher education in India. These institutes have been declared by an Act of Parliament as Institutes of National Importance. AIIMS New Delhi, the fore-runner parent excellence institution, was established in 1956.
History[edit]
The history of AIIMS begins with the vision of Nehruvian dream, which envisaged establishing a center of excellence in the medical sciences in India. The first AIIMS was set up in New Delhi following the recommendations of the Bhore Committee, in 1956. Over the years, several AIIMS have been established across the country to reduce regional disparities in the quality of undergraduate and postgraduate medical education.
Objectives[edit]
The primary objectives of the AIIMS are to develop patterns of teaching in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education in all its branches so as to demonstrate a high standard of medical education to all medical colleges and other allied institutions in India. They are designed to bring together in one place educational facilities of the highest order for the training of personnel in all important branches of health activity.
Locations[edit]
As of now, there are several AIIMS located across India including New Delhi, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Jodhpur, Patna, Raipur, Rishikesh, and more. Each AIIMS operates autonomously under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India.
Admission[edit]
Admission to the undergraduate courses such as MBBS in AIIMS is through a national level entrance examination known as NEET (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test). For postgraduate courses, the admission is through the AIIMS PG exam.
Courses Offered[edit]
AIIMS institutions offer a variety of courses in medicine, nursing, dentistry, biotechnology, and paramedical. The undergraduate medical course leading to the award of MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery) is the most sought after.
Facilities[edit]
Each AIIMS is equipped with a hospital that provides treatment to millions of people. They also serve as research centers where new findings in medicine are constantly churned out. The institutions have state-of-the-art labs, libraries, and teaching facilities.
Challenges and Achievements[edit]
While AIIMS have played a pivotal role in healthcare and education in India, they face challenges such as faculty shortages and infrastructural constraints. Despite these challenges, AIIMS have made significant contributions to medical research, education, and healthcare services in India.
Future Prospects[edit]
The Government of India plans to set up more AIIMS across different states to ensure a more balanced distribution of healthcare services and education in the country. This expansion is expected to improve the quality of health care and make it more accessible to the general population.
