Alert (pronunciation: /əˈlɜːrt/) is a state of active attention by high sensory awareness such as being watchful and prompt to meet danger or emergency, or being quick to perceive and act. It can also refer to an automatic signal, message, or sound that warns people of danger.
Etymology
The term "alert" originates from the Italian phrase "all' erta" which means "on the watch". It was adopted into English in the 17th century.
