Aleppo (pronunciation: /əˈlɛpoʊ/; Arabic: حلب‎ / ALA-LC: Ḥalab, IPA: [ˈħalab]) is a city in Syria, serving as the capital of the Aleppo Governorate, the most populous Syrian governorate.

Etymology

The origin of the name "Aleppo" is uncertain. Some have suggested it comes from the Syriac word Halab which means "white," referring to the color of its soil. Others believe it is derived from Hittite Halpa.
