Chemistry
4-Hexylresorcinol is a white to pale yellow crystalline solid with a characteristic odor. It is soluble in alcohol, ether, and acetone, but insoluble in water. The compound has a molecular formula of C12H18O2 and a molecular weight of 194.27 g/mol. It is synthesized through the Friedel-Crafts alkylation of resorcinol with hexyl chloride.
Uses
4-Hexylresorcinol is primarily used as an antiseptic in mouthwash and skin care products due to its ability to kill or inhibit the growth of microorganisms. It is also used in the food industry as a preservative for prawns and other shellfish to prevent them from discoloration. In addition, it is used in the textile industry as a dye intermediate.
