11-Dehydrocorticosterone
11-Dehydrocorticosterone is a steroid hormone that is produced in the adrenal gland. It is a corticosteroid and is involved in the regulation of blood pressure and immune response.
Structure and Function[edit]

- 11-Dehydrocorticosterone is a 21-carbon steroid hormone. It is one of the corticosteroids, which are a class of steroid hormones that are produced in the adrenal cortex of the adrenal glands.
- The primary function of 11-Dehydrocorticosterone is to regulate the body's metabolism and immune response. It does this by binding to the glucocorticoid receptor, which is found in almost every vertebrate animal cell.
Production and Regulation[edit]
The production of 11-Dehydrocorticosterone is regulated by the hypothalamus and pituitary gland. The hypothalamus releases corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH), which signals the pituitary gland to release adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH). ACTH then stimulates the adrenal glands to produce 11-Dehydrocorticosterone.
Clinical Significance[edit]
Abnormal levels of 11-Dehydrocorticosterone can lead to a variety of health problems. High levels can cause Cushing's syndrome, which is characterized by weight gain, high blood pressure, and diabetes. Low levels can lead to Addison's disease, which is characterized by weight loss, low blood pressure, and fatigue.
