Žametovka
Žametovka
Žametovka is a red wine grape variety indigenous to Slovenia. It is one of the oldest domesticated grape varieties in the region and is known for its historical significance and unique characteristics. The grape is primarily grown in the Lower Styrian region, which is part of the larger Podravje wine-growing area.
History
Žametovka has a rich history that dates back several centuries. It is believed to have been cultivated since the Middle Ages, making it one of the oldest known grape varieties still in production today. The name "Žametovka" is derived from the Slovenian word "žamet," meaning "velvet," which refers to the velvety texture of the grape's skin.
The most famous Žametovka vine is located in Maribor, Slovenia, and is known as the "Old Vine" (Stara trta). This vine is over 400 years old and holds the Guinness World Record for being the oldest living vine still producing fruit. The Old Vine is a symbol of the rich viticultural heritage of the region and is celebrated annually during the Old Vine Festival.
Viticulture
Žametovka is well-suited to the climate and soil conditions of the Lower Styrian region. The grape thrives in the continental climate, which provides warm summers and cold winters, ideal for the development of its unique flavor profile. The soil in this region is predominantly composed of marl and clay, which contributes to the grape's distinctive mineral notes.
The vine is known for its vigorous growth and high yield. However, it requires careful management to ensure the quality of the grapes. Pruning and canopy management are essential to control the vine's vigor and to ensure adequate sunlight exposure and air circulation.
Wine Characteristics
Wines made from Žametovka grapes are typically light to medium-bodied with a bright ruby color. They exhibit a range of flavors, including red berries, cherries, and subtle floral notes. The wines are known for their refreshing acidity and soft tannins, making them approachable and versatile.
Žametovka wines are often enjoyed young, but some winemakers experiment with oak aging to add complexity and depth. The grape's natural acidity makes it a good candidate for blending with other varieties to create balanced and harmonious wines.
Cultural Significance
The Old Vine in Maribor is not only a viticultural marvel but also a cultural icon. It is celebrated as a symbol of resilience and longevity, representing the enduring spirit of the Slovenian people. The annual Old Vine Festival attracts visitors from around the world, who come to witness the ceremonial grape harvest and to taste the wine produced from this ancient vine.
The vine's legacy is preserved through the work of the Old Vine House, a museum and cultural center dedicated to promoting the history and heritage of Žametovka and Slovenian winemaking.
