Diffuse proliferative nephritis is a type of glomerulonephritis that is characterized by significant inflammation and proliferation of the cells within the glomerulus of the kidney. This condition can lead to significant kidney damage and, in severe cases, kidney failure.
Causes[edit]
Diffuse proliferative nephritis is often caused by an overactive immune system that mistakenly attacks the kidneys. This can occur as a result of certain diseases, such as systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), Goodpasture's syndrome, and vasculitis. In some cases, the exact cause of diffuse proliferative nephritis is unknown.
Symptoms[edit]
The symptoms of diffuse proliferative nephritis can vary greatly depending on the severity of the condition. Common symptoms include blood in the urine (hematuria), protein in the urine (proteinuria), and high blood pressure (hypertension). Other symptoms may include swelling (edema), particularly in the legs and feet, and fatigue.
Diagnosis[edit]
Diagnosis of diffuse proliferative nephritis typically involves a combination of medical history, physical examination, and laboratory tests. These tests may include urinalysis, blood tests, and a kidney biopsy.
Treatment[edit]
Treatment for diffuse proliferative nephritis typically involves managing the symptoms and slowing the progression of the disease. This may include medications to control high blood pressure, reduce proteinuria, and suppress the immune system. In severe cases, dialysis or a kidney transplant may be necessary.
