Felypressin is a synthetic vasoconstrictor that is commonly used in dentistry as an adjunct to local anesthetics. It is a peptide analog of vasopressin, a naturally occurring hormone that regulates the body's retention of water and constricts blood vessels.

Mechanism of Action[edit]

Felypressin acts on vasopressin receptors in the vascular smooth muscle, leading to vasoconstriction. This action helps to prolong the effect of local anesthetics by reducing blood flow to the area, thereby decreasing the rate of anesthetic absorption into the bloodstream.

Uses[edit]

Felypressin is primarily used in dental procedures to enhance the efficacy of local anesthetics such as lidocaine. It is particularly useful in patients who may be sensitive to epinephrine, another vasoconstrictor commonly used in dental anesthetics.

Side Effects[edit]

While felypressin is generally well-tolerated, it can cause side effects such as hypertension, bradycardia, and arrhythmias. It is important to use it with caution in patients with cardiovascular disease.

Contraindications[edit]

Felypressin should not be used in patients with known hypersensitivity to the drug or in those with severe cardiovascular conditions. It is also contraindicated in pregnancy due to potential effects on uterine contraction.
