Patrick Vallance

Patrick Vallance is a British physician, scientist, and clinical pharmacologist who has made significant contributions to both medicine and the pharmaceutical industry. He is currently serving as the United Kingdom's Chief Scientific Adviser.

Early Life and Education

Patrick Vallance was born in Essex, England. He attended St George's Hospital Medical School, where he received his medical degree. He later earned a PhD in Pharmacology from the University of London.

Career

Vallance began his career as a lecturer in medicine at the University of London. He then moved to the University College London (UCL), where he became the head of the Department of Medicine. During his time at UCL, Vallance made significant contributions to the understanding of nitric oxide and its role in vascular biology.

In 2012, Vallance joined the pharmaceutical company GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) as the head of Research and Development. He was instrumental in the development of several important drugs and therapies during his tenure at GSK.

In 2018, Vallance was appointed as the UK's Chief Scientific Adviser. In this role, he has been a key figure in the UK's response to the COVID-19 pandemic, providing scientific advice to the government and communicating scientific information to the public.

Honours and Awards

Vallance has received several awards and honours for his contributions to medicine and science. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society and the Academy of Medical Sciences. In 2019, he was knighted for his services to open science and research.
