Essex (medical term)

Essex (/ˈɛsɪks/), in the context of medical terminology, is not a recognized term. It is primarily known as a county in the southeast of England. However, there are several medical institutions, conditions, and procedures that bear the name Essex, such as the Essex-Lopresti fracture and Essex County Hospital.

Essex-Lopresti Fracture

An Essex-Lopresti fracture is a rare, severe injury to the forearm. It involves a fracture of the radial head at the elbow, dislocation or subluxation of the distal radioulnar joint (DRUJ), and disruption of the interosseous membrane. This injury is named after Peter Essex-Lopresti, a British orthopedic surgeon who first described it in 1951.

Essex County Hospital

Essex County Hospital is a defunct hospital in Colchester, Essex, England. It was managed by the Colchester Hospital University NHS Foundation Trust. The hospital provided a range of services including a stroke unit and a diabetes center. It closed in 2018 and services were transferred to other local hospitals.

Etymology

The term Essex is derived from the Old English 'East-Seaxe' which means 'East Saxons'. The term 'Seaxe' is derived from the Old English word for 'knife' or 'short sword', which was used as a symbol of the Saxon people.
