Monroe County is a county located in the southeastern part of the U.S. state of Tennessee. As of the 2020 census, the population was 46,814. Its county seat is Madisonville. The county is named after James Monroe, the fifth President of the United States.

History

Monroe County was established in 1819 from lands acquired from the Cherokee through the Treaty of Calhoun. The county has a rich history, including its role in the American Civil War and its development during the 19th and 20th centuries.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 653 square miles (1,690 km²), of which 636 square miles (1,650 km²) is land and 17 square miles (44 km²) (2.6%) is water. The county is part of the Great Smoky Mountains and includes part of the Cherokee National Forest.
