University College (colloquially referred to as Univ) is one of the constituent colleges of the University of Oxford in Oxford, England. It has a claim to being the oldest college of the university, having been founded in 1249 by William of Durham. The college is located on High Street and is known for its distinctive architecture and academic excellence.
History[edit]
University College was founded in 1249 by William of Durham, who left a bequest to support ten or twelve masters studying theology. The college was originally established to provide a place of residence for scholars studying at the university. Over the centuries, the college has grown and evolved, becoming one of the leading colleges at Oxford.
Architecture[edit]
The college's main quadrangle, known as the Radcliffe Quadrangle, was built in the 17th century and is a fine example of Jacobean architecture. The Main Quadrangle and the Goodhart Building are other notable architectural features of the college. The Chapel and the Hall are also significant, with the chapel being known for its beautiful stained glass windows.
