Eucalyptus melanophloia

Eucalyptus melanophloia, commonly known as the silver-leaved ironbark, is a species of tree that is endemic to Australia. It is a member of the genus Eucalyptus within the family Myrtaceae. This species is notable for its distinctive silver-grey foliage and dark, rough bark.
Description[edit]
Eucalyptus melanophloia typically grows to a height of 10 to 25 meters. The bark is dark grey to black, deeply furrowed, and rough over the entire trunk and branches. The leaves are lanceolate to ovate, with a silvery-grey appearance due to a dense covering of trichomes.
The inflorescence consists of clusters of white flowers that bloom from late winter to early summer. The fruit is a woody capsule that contains numerous small seeds.
Taxonomy[edit]
Eucalyptus melanophloia was first formally described by the botanist George Bentham in 1867. The species name melanophloia is derived from the Greek words melas meaning "black" and phloios meaning "bark," referring to the tree's dark bark.
Distribution and Habitat[edit]
This species is found in Queensland, New South Wales, and the Northern Territory. It typically grows in open woodlands and savannas on sandy or loamy soils, often in association with other Eucalyptus species.
Ecology[edit]
Eucalyptus melanophloia provides important habitat and food sources for various fauna, including birds, insects, and marsupials. The flowers are particularly attractive to pollinators such as bees.
Uses[edit]
The wood of Eucalyptus melanophloia is hard and durable, making it suitable for use in construction, fencing, and firewood. The tree is also valued for its ornamental qualities and is sometimes planted in landscaping and revegetation projects.
Conservation Status[edit]
Eucalyptus melanophloia is not currently listed as a threatened species. However, its habitat is subject to pressures from land clearing, agriculture, and urban development.
