Israeli politician

Ehud Olmert (born 30 September 1945) is an Israeli politician and lawyer who served as the 12th Prime Minister of Israel from 2006 to 2009. He was also the Mayor of Jerusalem from 1993 to 2003 and held various ministerial positions in the Israeli government.

Early Life and Education

Ehud Olmert was born in Binyamina-Giv'at Ada, Mandatory Palestine. He attended the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, where he earned a degree in psychology, philosophy, and law. He later became a successful lawyer.

Political Career

Olmert began his political career as a member of the Likud party. He was first elected to the Knesset in 1973 and served in various capacities, including as Minister of Health and Minister of Industry, Trade and Labour.

Mayor of Jerusalem

In 1993, Olmert was elected as the Mayor of Jerusalem, a position he held until 2003. During his tenure, he focused on urban development and infrastructure projects.

Ministerial Roles

Olmert served as the Minister of Industry, Trade and Labour from 2003 to 2006 under Prime Minister Ariel Sharon. He was also appointed as the Minister of Finance in 2006.

Prime Minister of Israel

Olmert became the acting Prime Minister of Israel in January 2006 after Ariel Sharon suffered a stroke. He officially assumed the role in April 2006. His tenure was marked by the 2006 Lebanon War and various domestic challenges. He resigned in 2009 amid corruption allegations.

In 2014, Olmert was convicted of bribery and sentenced to prison. He was released in 2017 after serving a reduced sentence.
