Nichelle Nichols (born Grace Dell Nichols; December 28, 1932 – July 30, 2022) was an American actress, singer, and dancer. She is best known for her portrayal of Nyota Uhura in the original Star Trek series and its film sequels. Nichols' role was groundbreaking as one of the first African American women featured in a major television series not portraying a servant.

Early Life

Nichols was born in Robbins, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago. She was the daughter of Samuel Earl Nichols, a factory worker who was also the town mayor of Robbins, and his wife, Lishia (Parks) Nichols. She studied in Chicago as well as New York and Los Angeles.

Career

Early Career

Nichols began her career as a singer and dancer, performing in nightclubs and with Duke Ellington and Lionel Hampton's bands. She also appeared in stage productions, including a role in the musical Porgy and Bess.

Star Trek

Nichols was cast as Nyota Uhura, the communications officer aboard the starship USS Enterprise, in the original Star Trek series (1966–1969). Her role was significant for breaking racial stereotypes and was a source of inspiration for many, including future astronaut Mae Jemison.

During the first year of the series, Nichols considered leaving the show. However, a conversation with Martin Luther King Jr., who was a fan of the show, convinced her to stay. King told her that her role was too important as a symbol of progress and hope for African Americans and women.

Post-Star Trek

After Star Trek, Nichols continued to work in television and film. She also became an advocate for NASA, helping to recruit minority and female personnel for the space agency. Her efforts contributed to the recruitment of astronauts such as Guion Bluford and Sally Ride.

Music and Writing

Nichols released two music albums, Down to Earth and Out of This World. She also authored an autobiography, Beyond Uhura: Star Trek and Other Memories.

Personal Life

Nichols was married twice and had one son, Kyle Johnson. She was also known for her charitable work and advocacy for civil rights.

Death

Nichols passed away on July 30, 2022, at the age of 89.
