Martin Luther King Jr.
Martin Luther King Jr. (pronounced /ˈmɑːrtɪn ˈluːθər kɪŋ ˈdʒuːnjər/; January 15, 1929 – April 4, 1968) was an American Christian minister and civil rights activist. He is best known for advancing civil rights through nonviolence and civil disobedience, inspired by his Christian beliefs and the nonviolent activism of Mahatma Gandhi.
Etymology
The name "Martin Luther King Jr." is derived from the German name "Martin Luther", a key figure in the Protestant Reformation, and "King", a common English surname. The "Jr." denotes that he is the son of Martin Luther King Sr., who was also a Baptist minister.
