The state is bordered by Rajasthan to the west, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Delhi to the northwest, Uttarakhand and Nepal to the north, Bihar to the east, Madhya Pradesh to the south, and touches the states of Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh to the southeast. It covers a large part of the highly fertile and densely populated upper Gangetic Plain. Uttar Pradesh holds a significant place in India's history, culture, and religion, being the birthplace of Lord Rama and Lord Krishna, the incarnation of the Hindu god Vishnu; it also plays a crucial role in Buddhism as the location of Sarnath, where Gautama Buddha first taught the Dharma, and Kushinagar, where he is believed to have attained Parinirvana.
