Banaras Hindu University (BHU) is a prestigious public central university located in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, India. Founded in 1916 by the visionary leader Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya, BHU is one of the largest residential universities in Asia, with over 30,000 students residing on campus.
History
The idea of establishing a university in Varanasi was first conceived by Annie Besant and Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya. The university was established with the aim of promoting the study of Hindu Shastras and Sanskrit literature, along with the advancement of scientific and technical education. The foundation stone of the university was laid by Lord Hardinge, the then Viceroy of India, on February 4, 1916.
Campus
The BHU campus is spread over 1,300 acres and is located on the southern edge of Varanasi, near the banks of the Ganges River. The campus is known for its lush greenery and well-maintained gardens. It houses several faculties, departments, and institutes, including the Institute of Medical Sciences, Institute of Agricultural Sciences, and Institute of Environment and Sustainable Development.

BHU offers a wide range of undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programs in various fields such as arts, science, commerce, law, medicine, and engineering. The university is organized into 6 institutes and 14 faculties, with more than 140 departments.
