Instruments used in urology
Instruments used in Urology
Urology is a branch of medicine that focuses on the surgical and medical diseases of the male and female urinary tract system and the male reproductive organs. The organs under the domain of urology include the kidneys, adrenal glands, ureters, urinary bladder, urethra, and the male reproductive organs (testes, epididymis, vas deferens, seminal vesicles, prostate, and penis). In the practice of urology, various instruments are used to diagnose, treat, and manage urological conditions.
Cystoscope
A cystoscope is an instrument used in urology to examine the bladder. This instrument is a thin tube with a light and a camera at the end, which is inserted into the urethra and advanced into the bladder. The cystoscope allows the urologist to visualize the interior of the bladder and urethra, and perform procedures such as biopsies and removal of bladder stones.
Ureteroscope
A ureteroscope is a thin, flexible instrument used to treat disorders of the ureters and kidneys. Like the cystoscope, it has a light and a camera at the end. It is used to diagnose and treat conditions such as kidney stones and ureteral tumors.
Lithotripter
A lithotripter is a medical device used in the non-invasive treatment of kidney stones and gallstones. This instrument uses acoustic shock waves to break the stones into tiny pieces, which can then be passed naturally out of the body.
Prostate Probe
A prostate probe is used in the diagnosis and treatment of prostate conditions. It is used to take a biopsy of the prostate gland, or to deliver targeted treatment to the prostate.
Catheters
Catheters are tubes that can be inserted into a body cavity, duct, or vessel. In urology, catheters are often used to drain urine from the bladder when a patient is unable to do so naturally.
