Cambria Heights, Queens
Cambria Heights, Queens is a middle-class residential neighborhood located in the southeastern portion of the borough of Queens in New York City. It is bounded by Springfield Boulevard and Francis Lewis Boulevard to the west, the Elmont, Nassau County border on the east, Queens Village to the north, St. Albans to the west, and Montefiore Cemetery and Laurelton, Springfield Gardens and Rosedale to the south.
History[edit]
Cambria Heights was first incorporated in 1901 and was named after Cambria County, Pennsylvania, the hometown of a prominent developer's family. The area was largely developed during the 1950s and 1960s, as developers created suburban housing to accommodate the growing population.
Demographics[edit]
As of the 2010 United States Census, Cambria Heights had a population of 18,677. The neighborhood is predominantly African American, with a significant number of Caribbean immigrants. The median income for a household in the neighborhood is $76,553, which is higher than the average for both Queens and New York City.
Education[edit]
Cambria Heights is served by the New York City Department of Education. The neighborhood is home to several public and private schools, including Cambria Heights Academy, a public high school that focuses on career and technical education.
Transportation[edit]
Public transportation in Cambria Heights is provided by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, which operates several bus routes through the neighborhood. The closest subway station is the Jamaica Center – Parsons/Archer station, which is served by the E, J, and Z trains.
Notable people[edit]
Several notable individuals have hailed from Cambria Heights, including rapper Nicki Minaj, jazz musician Milt Hinton, and civil rights activist Betty Shabazz.
