The National Defence Medical Centre (NDMC) was a military hospital located in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. It served as the primary medical facility for the Canadian Armed Forces from its opening in 1961 until its closure in 1994.
History
The NDMC was established to provide comprehensive medical care to members of the Canadian military and their families. It was part of the Canadian Forces Health Services Group, which is responsible for delivering health services to the Canadian Armed Forces.
The hospital was equipped with various medical departments, including surgery, internal medicine, psychiatry, and radiology. It also had an emergency department to handle urgent medical cases.
Closure
In 1994, the NDMC was closed as part of a restructuring of military health services in Canada. The closure was part of a broader effort to integrate military and civilian health services, leading to the establishment of the Canadian Forces Health Services Centre in Ottawa.
Legacy
Although the NDMC is no longer operational, its legacy continues through the ongoing work of the Canadian Forces Health Services Group. The integration of military and civilian health services has allowed for more efficient and comprehensive care for military personnel.
