Cadmium Bromide

Cadmium bromide tetrahydrate

Cadmium bromide is a chemical compound with the formula CdBr_. It is a white, hygroscopic solid that is highly soluble in water and alcohol. Cadmium bromide is used in photography, lithography, and as a precursor to other cadmium compounds.

Structure and Properties

Cadmium bromide crystallizes in a layered structure similar to that of cadmium chloride. Each cadmium ion is coordinated by six bromide ions in an octahedral geometry. The layers are held together by van der Waals forces, allowing them to slide over each other easily.

Cadmium bromide is highly soluble in water, forming a colorless solution. It is also soluble in alcohol and acetone. The compound is hygroscopic, meaning it readily absorbs moisture from the air.

Preparation

Cadmium bromide can be prepared by the direct reaction of cadmium metal with bromine gas:

Cd + Br_ _ CdBr_

Alternatively, it can be synthesized by dissolving cadmium oxide or cadmium carbonate in hydrobromic acid:

CdO + 2 HBr _ CdBr_ + H_O

CdCO_ + 2 HBr _ CdBr_ + CO_ + H_O

Uses

Cadmium bromide is used in the photographic industry as a component of photographic developers and in lithography. It is also used in the preparation of other cadmium compounds and as a catalyst in organic synthesis.

Safety

Cadmium bromide, like other cadmium compounds, is toxic and poses significant health risks if inhaled or ingested. It is a known carcinogen and can cause damage to the kidneys, lungs, and bones. Proper safety precautions, including the use of personal protective equipment, should be taken when handling this compound.
