B. Carroll Reece
B. Carroll Reece (December 22, 1889 – March 19, 1961) was an American politician and Republican U.S. Representative from Tennessee. He served in the United States House of Representatives for nearly 20 years and was also the Chairman of the Republican National Committee.
Early Life and Education
Reece was born in Butler, Tennessee, in Johnson County. He attended Watauga Academy and later graduated from Carson-Newman College in 1914. He pursued further studies at New York University and Harvard University.
Military Service
During World War I, Reece served in the United States Army as a captain in the 81st Division. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for his bravery in combat.
Political Career
Reece was first elected to the United States House of Representatives in 1920, representing Tennessee's 1st congressional district. He served from 1921 to 1931 and again from 1933 to 1947. During his tenure, he was known for his conservative views and strong opposition to the New Deal policies of Franklin D. Roosevelt.
In 1946, Reece was elected as the Chairman of the Republican National Committee, a position he held until 1948. He played a significant role in the 1946 midterm elections, which saw the Republicans gain control of both houses of Congress.
Later Life and Legacy
After leaving Congress, Reece continued to be active in politics and public service. He was a member of several important committees and organizations. Reece passed away on March 19, 1961, in Johnson City, Tennessee.
Personal Life
Reece was married to Louise Goff Reece, who also served as a U.S. Representative from Tennessee after his death. They had one daughter, Louise Reece.
