Kandahar

Kandahar is the second-largest city in Afghanistan, and the capital of Kandahar Province. It is located in the south of the country, near the Arghandab River, and has a population of about 614,118. Kandahar is an important trading center for sheep, wool, cotton, silk, felt, food grains, fresh and dried fruit, and tobacco. The region produces fine fruits, especially pomegranates and grapes, and the city has plants for canning, drying, and packing fruit, and is a major source of marijuana and hashish en route to Tajikistan.

History

Kandahar has a rich history, having been a significant cultural, economic, and political hub in the region for centuries. It was the capital of the Afghan Empire and the Durrani Empire, and has been occupied by the Safavids, Mughals, and British Empire at various points in history. The city has been severely damaged and rebuilt several times.

Geography

Kandahar is located on a plateau to the south of the central mountains of Afghanistan, at an elevation of 1,010 m (3,310 ft). It is linked by highways with Herat to the west, Ghazni and Kabul to the northeast, Tarinkot to the north, and Quetta in Pakistan to the south.

Economy

The economy of Kandahar is largely based on trade and agriculture. The city is a major trading center, with goods traveling to and from Iran, Pakistan, and other parts of Afghanistan. Kandahar is known for its pomegranates and grapes, which are exported around the world.

Culture

Kandahar is a center of Pashtun culture. Pashto poetry and music are popular, and the city has produced many notable poets and musicians. The city is also known for its distinctive Pashtunwali traditional code of conduct and lifestyle.

Education

Kandahar is home to Kandahar University, which was established in 1990. The university has faculties in several disciplines, including engineering, medicine, and education.
