Culinary fruits are fruits that are considered in culinary terms to be fruits, vegetables, herbs, spices, or nuts, and are used in cooking. They are not necessarily botanical fruits.
Definition[edit]
In culinary terms, a fruit is usually any sweet-tasting plant part, especially a botanical fruit; a nut is any hard, oily, and shelled plant product; and a vegetable is any savory or less sweet plant product. However, in botany, a fruit is the ripened ovary or carpel that contains seeds, a nut is a type of fruit and not a seed, and a seed is a ripened ovule.
Examples[edit]
Examples of culinary fruits include, but are not limited to, apples, oranges, plums, bananas, and grapes. Some culinary fruits are eaten raw, while others are cooked. Some, like citrus fruits, are often used for their juice, while others, like apples, can be used for both eating raw and cooking.
Apples[edit]
Apples are a type of fruit that is grown on trees. They are typically round, with a thin skin that can be green, yellow, or red. The flesh of the apple is sweet and crisp. Apples are often eaten raw, but can also be used in cooking and baking.
Oranges[edit]
Oranges are a type of citrus fruit. They have a thick, orange skin that is often peeled away to reveal the juicy, sweet flesh inside. Oranges are often eaten raw or used for their juice.
Plums[edit]
Plums are a type of stone fruit, meaning they have a single large seed inside. They have a smooth, shiny skin that can be red, purple, or yellow, and a sweet, juicy flesh. Plums can be eaten raw or used in cooking and baking.
Bananas[edit]
Bananas are a type of fruit that is typically yellow when ripe. They have a thick skin that is peeled away to reveal the soft, sweet flesh inside. Bananas are usually eaten raw, but can also be used in cooking and baking.
Grapes[edit]
Grapes are a type of fruit that grows in clusters on vines. They can be green, red, or purple, and can be eaten raw or used to make wine.
