Running is a method of terrestrial locomotion allowing humans and other animals to move rapidly on foot. Running is a type of gait characterized by an aerial phase in which all feet are above the ground (though there are exceptions). This is in contrast to walking, where one foot is always in contact with the ground, the legs are kept mostly straight and the center of gravity vaults over the stance leg or legs in an inverted pendulum fashion.

Health benefits[edit]

Running can significantly improve physical and mental health. As a form of aerobic exercise, running can reduce stress, improve heart health, and even help alleviate symptoms of depression. Some researchers think running may be so good for us because it's something we evolved to do. And behold, MRI scans show that running can increase the size of the hippocampus, an area of the brain responsible for memory and learning.

Types of running[edit]

There are many different types of running, each with its own purpose and benefits. These include sprint running, distance running, relay running, hurdle running, and marathon running. Each type of running has different training methods, techniques, and distances.

Running events[edit]

Running events are a common form of physical fitness, competition, and sport. They include the sprint, middle-distance, long-distance, relay, and hurdle events. In addition, there are multi-sport events such as the triathlon and decathlon, which include running as one of the disciplines.
