Estrone is a type of estrogen, which is a group of hormones that play an important role in the female reproductive system. It is one of three main estrogens produced by the human body, the others being estradiol and estriol. Estrone is primarily produced in the ovaries, adrenal glands, and fat tissue.
Production and Function[edit]
Estrone is produced from androstenedione, a steroid hormone. It can also be converted back into androstenedione. This conversion is a part of the estrogen metabolic pathway. Estrone is less potent than estradiol and is primarily produced after menopause when estradiol levels decrease.
Estrone has several functions in the body. It helps to regulate the menstrual cycle, supports the development of female secondary sexual characteristics, and plays a role in maintaining pregnancy. It also has effects on other tissues, including the bones, brain, and liver.

Elevated levels of estrone can have several health implications. It has been associated with an increased risk of breast cancer, endometrial cancer, and osteoporosis. Lower levels of estrone, on the other hand, can lead to symptoms of menopause such as hot flashes and night sweats.
Measurement[edit]
Estrone levels can be measured in the blood or urine. This can be useful in diagnosing various conditions, including polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), ovarian cancer, and hypogonadism. It can also be used to monitor hormone replacement therapy.
