Vimto is a British soft drink that was first manufactured as a health tonic in cordial form, then decades later as a carbonated drink. It contains the juice of grapes, raspberries and blackcurrants, flavoured with herbs and spices. The original recipe was invented in 1908 by (John) Noel Nichols.
History
John Noel Nichols was a wholesaler of herbs, spices and medicines. He saw the market for soft drinks grow and created a healthy, herbal tonic which he originally named "Vim Tonic". The name was later shortened to Vimto. The drink was initially produced as a cordial for mixing with hot water in the winter or cold water in the summer. The first Vimto factory was established in Manchester, England.
Ingredients
The original recipe of Vimto includes the juice of grapes, raspberries and blackcurrants, flavoured with herbs and spices. The exact recipe is a closely guarded secret, only known by a few people within the company. The drink is available in cordial, carbonated and confectionery forms.
Popularity
Vimto has gained popularity worldwide, especially in the Middle East during the Ramadan fasting period, where it is often served at Iftar (the meal that breaks the fast). It is also popular in various African countries.
Variations
Over the years, Vimto has been produced in various forms. In addition to the original cordial, there is now a carbonated version, a 'still' version, a version with no added sugar, and a range of confectionery including lollipops and chewy sweets.
