Cigna is an American worldwide health services organization. Its insurance subsidiaries are major providers of medical, dental, disability, life and accident insurance and related products and services, the majority of which are offered through employers and other groups (e.g. governmental and non-governmental organizations, unions and associations).
History[edit]
Cigna was formed by the 1982 merger of the Connecticut General Life Insurance Company (CG) and INA Corporation (the parent corporation of Insurance Company of North America, the first stock insurance company in America). The company has its headquarters in Bloomfield, Connecticut and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and its healthcare division is headquartered in Nashville, Tennessee.
Services[edit]
Cigna offers a wide range of health services including medical insurance, dental insurance, vision insurance, pharmacy services, and behavioral health services. The company also provides Medicare and Medicaid products and health, life and accident insurance coverages primarily to individuals in the U.S. and selected international markets.
Global Operations[edit]
Cigna operates in 30 countries and jurisdictions and has more than 165 million customer and patient relationships worldwide. The company's largest division is Cigna HealthCare, which provides medical, dental, behavioral health, pharmacy and vision care benefits, as well as group disability and life insurance in the United States and selected international markets.
Criticisms and Controversies[edit]
Cigna has faced criticism and legal action in the past for allegedly denying necessary medical treatments to policyholders. The company has also been criticized for its high executive compensation packages.
