Dental Insurance

Dental insurance (/ˈdɛntəl ɪnˈʃʊərəns/) is a type of health insurance designed to pay a portion of the costs associated with dental care.

Etymology

The term "dental insurance" is derived from the words "dental", which is related to or involving the teeth, and "insurance", which is a practice or arrangement by which a company provides a guarantee of compensation for specified loss, damage, illness, or death in return for payment.

Overview

There are many different types of dental insurance plans, but most can be categorized as either Indemnity Plans or Managed-Care Plans. Indemnity plans, also known as fee-for-service plans, allow you to choose your own dentist and cover a portion of the costs. Managed-care plans, on the other hand, provide dental care through a network of contracted dentists and cover a larger portion of the costs, but limit your choice of dentist.

Dental insurance plans typically cover preventive care, such as regular checkups, cleanings, and x-rays, as well as basic procedures like fillings and extractions. More complex procedures, such as root canals and crowns, are usually covered at a lower percentage.

Related Terms

  • Deductible: The amount you pay for covered health care services before your insurance plan starts to pay.
  • Premium: The amount you pay for your insurance policy.
  • Co-payment: A fixed amount you pay for a covered health care service, usually when you receive the service.
  • Out-of-pocket maximum: The most you have to pay for covered services in a plan year. After you spend this amount on deductibles, copayments, and coinsurance, your health plan pays 100% of the costs of covered benefits.
