Candidal intertrigo

Candidal intertrigo is a specific form of the skin inflammation, intertrigo, which is caused by a yeast infection. It is characterized by an erythematous, macerated, weeping intertrigo, accompanied by satellite lesions. It is most commonly found in the folds of the skin, such as the armpits, between the fingers, and under the breasts.

Causes

Candidal intertrigo is caused by the yeast species Candida. This yeast is a normal part of the skin's flora, but can overgrow and cause infection if the skin is moist, damaged, or if the person has a weakened immune system.

Symptoms

The main symptoms of candidal intertrigo include:

• Red, raw-looking, and often shiny skin in the folds of the body
• Satellite lesions, or smaller red patches that appear around the main rash
• Itching, burning, or stinging in the affected area

Diagnosis

Diagnosis of candidal intertrigo is usually based on the appearance of the skin. A KOH test may be done to confirm the presence of yeast. In some cases, a skin biopsy may be needed to rule out other conditions.

Treatment

Treatment for candidal intertrigo involves keeping the skin dry and exposed to air, along with the application of topical antifungal creams. In severe cases, oral antifungal medication may be needed.

Prevention

Prevention strategies for candidal intertrigo include maintaining good skin hygiene, keeping skin dry and exposed to air, and avoiding tight, non-breathable clothing.
