Intertrigo
Intertrigo
Intertrigo (/ɪntəˈtraɪɡoʊ/) is a dermatological condition that involves inflammation (rash) of the body folds. It is a common skin condition affecting opposing surfaces of the skin.
Etymology
The term "Intertrigo" comes from the Latin "inter-" meaning between, and "-trigo" meaning to rub. It literally means "rubbing between" which describes the condition's cause.
Definition
Intertrigo is a superficial inflammatory dermatitis occurring on adjacent surfaces of the skin that are often in contact with each other, such as the underarms, under the breasts, in the abdominal folds, in the groin, and between the toes.
Symptoms
Symptoms of Intertrigo include red or reddish-brown rash, raw, itchy or oozing skin, foul odor, and skin breakdown.
Causes
Intertrigo is caused by moisture, heat, lack of air circulation, and friction in the skin folds. It can also be caused or worsened by infections from yeast, fungi, or bacteria.
Treatment
Treatment for Intertrigo focuses on keeping the skin dry and exposed to air combined with the application of a mild corticosteroid cream. In cases where a secondary infection is suspected, a topical or oral antibiotic or antifungal may be prescribed.
